US Life Sciences Labor Market Report

and Hiring Trends

Q1 2026 US Life Sciences Labor Market Snapshot

The US Life Sciences labor market showed early signs of stabilization in Q1 2026, with employers posting 362,866 job ads, representing a 7.1% increase quarter-over-quarter but a 3.6% decline year-over-year. While hiring activity improved sequentially, overall demand remains below prior-year levels, with organizations continuing to operate with discipline and a focus on essential roles.

Sub-sector performance was mixed. Research, Testing, and Medical Labs (RTM) led growth, increasing 4.1% year-over-year, while Pharmaceutical & Medicine Manufacturing (PMM) declined 4.5% and Medical Devices & Equipment (MDE) fell 13.8%. The widening gap between RTM and PMM activity suggests that service-oriented hiring is recovering first, often a precursor to broader manufacturing demand as upstream activity converts into production demand.

Hiring continues to concentrate in execution-critical functions, particularly across regulatory, clinical development, quality, and targeted commercial roles. At the same time, capital markets remain a gating factor. IPO activity is subdued, M&A remains selective, and companies continue to prioritize capital efficiency, contributing to a measured and uneven recovery across the sector.

Overall, the market remains in transition. The pace of decline has slowed, and momentum is beginning to return in select areas, but hiring remains closely tied to operational needs rather than broad expansion.
